Bronze is often treated as the wild-type base pattern in domestic turkey genetics. Black, white, slate, red, and patterned varieties cannot be reduced to one simple rule that applies to every cross. A white bird may carry a different genetic cause for white than another white bird.

That is why a statement such as "Bronze is dominant over white" is not enough to predict every Bronze-to-white mating. The specific alleles and line history matter.

  • 25% C/C, not showing or carrying the recessive allele
  • 50% C/c, not showing it but carrying it
  • 25% c/c, showing the recessive trait

That example explains inheritance, but it should not be assigned to a named turkey variety unless the trait truly follows that model.

A Bronze-looking tom crossed with a non-Bronze hen may produce mostly Bronze-looking poults in one genetic setup and a wider range in another. A black or white parent can also hide genes that appear in later generations. Entering "Bronze × white" without genotype details should return possible scenarios or a low-confidence result, not a false guarantee.

Using Color Plans to Meet Market or Show Goals

Define your target before selecting a pair. If you breed for a recognized variety, compare your plan with the current standard used by the show or breed organization. Color alone does not make a bird show quality.

For market goals, record what buyers actually request and which pairings produce consistent, healthy poults. Do not sacrifice genetic diversity, vigor, or sound structure for one visual trait.

Test matings can help confirm hidden genes. Keep enough offspring to make the result meaningful, and remember that a small hatch may not match the expected percentage.
